What we want
Boroondara should grow. Housing growth should include more diverse, affordable, public and social housing. It should be planned in a way that retains what makes Boroondara liveable today: its amenity, tree canopy, neighbourhood character, heritage, environment, climate resilience and open space.
Planning for housing growth should be council-led, collaborative, responsive to local context and environmentally responsible.
Growth should be shaped through a transparent process, with background work and assessments released during the consultation process.
It should also be shaped by a strategic vision for the municipality and place-based planning. Opportunities for employment should extend beyond low paid service industries, and a fully funded infrastructure program that ensures infrastructure upgrades keep pace with growth should be embedded in the planning.
Density done well requires thoughtful, transparent, evidence-based planning, not rushed, generic, one-size-fits-all changes based on standardised assessments of existing building typologies — for example, “heritage shops”, “non-heritage shops” and “large opportunity sites”.
